Hi, I'm Steve Walker — founder of Done Once Lab and creator of the Legacy Asset Locator. I live in Boise, Idaho with my wife Nicki and our two kids.

I've spent most of my career as an engineer in the defense and aerospace sector, where organization wasn't optional. Everything had to be documented, planned, and accessible across teams. That mindset followed me home.

So by most measures, I had things together. Password vault. Organized documents. Will, trust, POAs — all in place. I was the operator in our house.

I knew where everything was. The problem was, I was the only one who did.

The moment that made it real happened while Nicki and I were traveling in Mexico. She couldn't get into one of her accounts online. Simple fix — I pulled up our password vault and gave her the login. Except she didn't know the password to the vault itself. The vault that holds the keys to everything we own.

Nobody was hurt. It wasn't a crisis. But something clicked that I couldn't un-click.

She didn't just not know the vault password. She didn't know what accounts existed. She didn't know where the documents were stored. She didn't know who to call or where to begin. Our life looked organized from the outside — and in many ways it was — but if something happened to me, she'd be left trying to piece it all together while grieving and raising our kids alone.

We didn't have a mess you could see. We had an invisible mess.
